Baking: Chocolate, Cherry and orange cake

I think I’ve cracked making what I call “proper” cakes as opposed to cupcakes,  I just now have to get better at decorating them!  The cakes taste lovely,  but their appearance leaves a lot to be desired 😐 This is essentially a rehash of this other chocolate cake I made

Ingredients for the cake
6oz butter
6oz caster sugar
6oz self raising flour (minus 1 tbsp)
3 eggs
1 heaped tsp baking powder
1 tbsp cocoa
Pinch of salt
1 tsp orange oil

Ingredients for filling
2 tbsp chocolate hazelnut spread
2 tbsp cherry jam

Ingredients for icing
6 oz butter
Icing sugar
1 tsp orange oil
1 tbsp cocoa
Dark and white chocolate (finely grated)

Method
Preheat the oven to gas mark 5 and line two 19cm cake tins.

Cream together the butter and sugar then beat in the eggs and orange oil. Then add the remainder of the cake ingredients and divide the mixture between the two tins. Bake on same shelf for 25 – 30 mins,  quickly swapping halfway through.  Allow to stand in tins for a couple of mins before removing and transferring to cooling trays.

Once cooled spread the chocolate spread then the jam onto one half of the cake,  then layer the other on top.

To make the icing,  put the butter in a bowl and using a whisk, add the cocoa and gradually add icing sugar,  orange oil and any food colouring (optional) until correct taste and consistency is achieved. Spread or pipe onto cake then top with the grated chocolate.
